The changing face of Apple

It has been a very interesting couple of weeks for Apple. Tim Cook (CEO) and Peter Oppenheimer (VP of Finance) announced that Apple will be paying a dividend for the first time to their shareholders. You may ask why this is a big deal, well the late Steve Jobs fought against the dividend plan. His idea was that dividends gets taxed heavily and thus costs the company more than what the public sees. This is not a “Jobs would have done this” or “Apple is losing the plot’ post but rather a highlight reel of the changes Apple is going through. Since Cook took over a few big things have happened. The...

iPad 3 or iPad HD?

After last weeks announcement that there have been 25 billion app downloads on both the iPhone and iPad, it is no wonder that tomorrow is a day that Apple fans have been looking forward to for a while.  Tomorrow sees the official unveiling of the third generation iPad.  Normally Apple plays coy and sets no expectations to their product launches but this time they have not done so: “We have something you really have to see. And touch”. The media invitation, shown above  has caused a great deal of rumor construction. Is the home button no longer on the device? Is Siri going to be on this...

Steve must be smiling

The last few days have had one major technology story. Apple had a record breaking last quarter of 2011 and has shattered all expectations from financial analysts. The signs were all there but I don’t think anyone could have predicted just how big the numbers were going to be. Clue: They are massive and I think many technology boardrooms contained staff that were shocked with the results that Apple posted. The Company sold 37.04 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 128 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 15.43 million iPads during the quarter, a 111 percent unit increase...

Apple confirms Anobit acquisition

Apple confirmed yesterday that it has acquired Israeli flash storage startup Anobit in December. However, in typical Apple fashion they declined to reveal the price of acquisition (rumoured to be $390 – $500 million). You might wonder what the big deal is about this transaction. In my opinion it is to compliment Apple’s efforts in using flash memory on their products. Apple told the press that “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.” Apple’s most popular products (iPhone, iPad, iPod and a few MacBook...
