DIY Homemade Hair Treatments

Why break the bank on expensive hair salon visits when you can make easy homemade hair treatments with ingredients from your kitchen? Here are four DIY hair treatments that will leave your tresses soft to the touch:

Avocado for Dry and Damaged Hair

Avocado on whiteOne of nature’s best moisturisers, avocado, is often used in beauty products for their hydrating and revitalising properties. Rich in vitamins, fat, protein and natural oils, avocados provide the perfect hair mask for those with dry or damaged hair.

Ingredients:

1 x Avocado

2 tsp x Olive Oil

Directions:

  • Mash avocado, add the olive oil and  blend until smooth.
  • Apply the mixture to dry hair, working from the roots to your scalp.
  • Wrap your hair in a shower cap for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water, ensuring that you remove all of the mixture.
  • Shampoo and condition as usual.

For best results, apply the avocado mask to damaged hair once or twice a week.

Eggs for Hair Growth

EggEggs contain vitamins, essential fatty acids and a large amount of protein which conditions and strengthens damaged hair. Known for its healing properties, egg conditioning restores softness and shine and promotes hair growth.

Ingredients:

2 x Eggs

1 tbs x Olive Oil

Directions:

  • Whisk the yolk of the eggs and olive oil together, until fluffy.
  • Apply the mixture to towel dried hair and leave it for 10 – 20 minutes.
  • Rinse your hair with cool water, and wash with a mild shampoo.

This egg yolk treatment is good for hair growth and can be used two to three times a week.

Beer for Voluminous Tresses

beer-duoUsing beer in your hair care routine will give life to limp, dull tresses. The hair absorbs the beer, making the strands thicker and boosting the volume of the hair. The alcohol in the beer contains proteins and B vitamins, which not only strengthen and nourish hair but also give it that extra shine.

Ingredients

One fermented beer

Directions:

  • After you’ve finished with your usual shampooing and conditioning, simply pour the flat beer over wet hair.
  • Massage the scalp gently and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Rinse the beer out thoroughly with cold water.

You don’t have to use the beer with every hair wash, as the effects lasts for several weeks.

Mayonnaise for Hair Repair

Made from eggs, mayonnaise contains oil and proteins that repair and rejuvenate damaged hair. For best results, use full-fat mayonnaise and not fat-free, or mayonnaise substitutes.

Ingredients:

Use 3 to 5 tablespoons of mayonnaise (depending on the length and thickness of your hair).

Directions:

  • Apply the mayonnaise to dry or damp hair.
  • Use a wide-combed tooth or your fingers to work the mayonnaise through your hair, starting from the root to the ends.
  • Wrap your hair in a shower cap and for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse your hair thoroughly, followed by a gentle wash with a pea-size amount of shampoo.

Apply treatment once a month.

Homemade hair treatments are super easy to make and you are able to customise it to suit your hair’s needs. It’s not only cost-efficient, but also contains no harsh chemicals, giving you strong, healthy hair.
