MeeGo becomes a no go for Intel

At the moment it is nothing more than an unconfirmed rumour but it seems that Intel is to stop development on MeeGo. MeeGo was a partnership between Intel and Nokia. The main reason for the partnership was to help Intel with the adoption of their mobile processors (Intel Atom) as ARM has been the dominant CPU for device manufacturers. ARM, a little company from Britain has given the big corporate (Intel) a few headaches. Intel I believe thought that Nokia would choose the MeeGo platform for their top of the line smart phones. In all honesty the concept was a good idea but it was doomed from the...

Intel to manufacture their own Tablets

Regular readers will be aware that this year has a big elephant in the room. The Elephant is so big that every electronic manufacturer wants to see it but only a few have the capacity to do so. The tablet ecosystem is very congested and has many players in it. There is one dominant brand in it (Apple) which can make or break the opportunity that other manufacturers have to enter the ecosystem. The actual hardware makers that produce all the bits for the iPad can be seen as the silent heroes of the ecosystem and are signed to very stringent contracts to do the things that Steve Jobs and his staff...

The Most Significant Technology Announcement Of The Year

Yesterday was a remarkable day. Historical even if one had read the press release headline given by Intel; “the biggest technology announcement of the year”. Upon reading it I immediately thought that Intel will announce something big. My first guess was a tie-up between the Intel CPU chips and McAfee in some manner, but to no avail. Instead Intel has unveiled a new transistor, the building block of a CPU. Intel Corporation today announced a significant breakthrough in the evolution of the transistor, the microscopic building block of modern electronics. For the first time since the invention of...

Intel’s Sandy Bridge Defect Crisis

This past week Intel found a design flaw in their new Sandy Bridge processors.  This is potentially the beginning of a story that could cost Intel a Billion dollars. Yes, I said a billion dollars. The damage to the reputation that Intel already has experienced could be even greater. What makes this news of even greater importance is that Intel are in a  fight against its traditional competitor (AMD) and an upstart called ARM. The company’s relationship with Microsoft can no longer be seen as strong and profitable. In a press release Intel provide details as to the extent of the flaw: “Intel...

The Intel & Microsoft Relationship

Microsoft has had a below par year in terms of innovation. Their Windows Phone 7 cellphone operating system got a luke warm reception. The quiet disappearance of the HP Slate Tablet indicates that their move into the tablet computing arena is going nowhere at the moment. Compare this situation to that of Apple and Android, then Microsoft look like it is becoming irrelevant. I am fully aware of the dominance of their Windows operating system software but in all honesty desktop computing is no longer the cool market to be in. Smartphones and tablet computers are the main reasons for the dominance that...
