Big changes at Research in Motion

Winds of change are starting to blow over Research in Motion (RIM) in Canada. On Sunday co-CEO’s Jim Balsillie and Mike Laziridis handed over their duties to Thorsten Heins.  Heins has been Chief Operating Officer of RIM (BlackBerry) for the past 4 years. The fact that the RIM board felt the CEO position should be held by an insider without looking for a fresh pair of eyes from a neutral person is interesting.  They are obviously trying to make a change without rocking the boat completely. It also looks like a figure head change as Balsillie and Laziridis are no longer associated with the...

BlackBerry Unveil The Torch 9810 & 9860

BlackBerry unveiled their latest challengers to the iPhone yesterday in Toronto. The current range of BlackBerry products has not got the world on fire in terms of sales. RIM is facing the biggest challenge since their arrival as a cellphone manufacturer. The sales numbers in North America and Europe have not been inspiring. The Technological Chameleon

Research In Motion (RIM) in my opinion is currently a technological chameleon. It does not know whether it is an enterprise juggernaut or a consumer electronics manufacturer. It seems the company is struggling with their identity and are on a bit of a downward spiral. I must confess I am surprised that the RIM shareholders have given their blessing to having 2 co-CEO’s. One ultimate responsible person is the norm and it ensures that one vision is given to all the staff. I am not convinced that by having 2 co-CEO’s someone is ultimately responsible for product decisions etc. I am a firm believer in...

Is the RIM falling off the wheel that drives BlackBerry?

BlackBerry is in trouble and I mean big trouble. I might be clutching at straws but I sense the Canadian smart phone giant is in an “all-in” mode with its Playbook tablet. Cue the death march, maybe but I sense all is not well. In South Africa at the moment, BlackBerry is the fastest growing smart phone manufacturer. It does not need too much analysis to understand the growth. BlackBerry Internet Services and the fact that subscribers potentially don’t have to pay data fees have seen brisk adoption by the South African public. However, the same could not be said of their international numbers....
