5 pieces of fitness and outdoor tech that aren’t Fitbit

Wearable technology has become more common in recent years thanks to the rise of products like Fitbit and the Apple Watch, but there’s more to sports tech than just fitness trackers.

Nixon’s Android Wear smartwatch, The Mission, is the world’s first action sports smartwatch. Geared towards surfers and snowboarders, The Mission is equipped with preloaded apps and real-time surf and snow shred alerts right on your wrist. It has 10-ATM water resistance and a roll cage bezel.

GoPro has long been the go to name when it comes to action cameras. The Hero 5 is GoPro’s true flagship camera with all the shooting options from the Hero 4 with the additions of raw and wide dynamic range photo capture, linear field of view video, a touchscreen, a waterproof body, GPS, electronic image stabilization (EIS), stereo audio, voice control, the option for auto cloud uploads, and what is undeniably the best photo and video quality in any GoPro.

Apple Watch is the best selling smartwatch on the planet, and with good reason. The second iteration of the wearable, known as Apple Watch Series 2, is faster than its predecessor, has a far better OS, onboard GPS, a brighter display and is waterproof up to 50 meters in salt or fresh water.

There is a special Nike Edition of the Watch Series 2 available, however the only difference is a slightly optimised Nike app and different colour watchbands.

Livall‘s take on smart wearable’s is different to many things currently on the market. The 7 in 1 bluetooth helmet lets you listen to music, answer calls, has built-in turn lights and SOS lighting.

It might be a bit overwhelming to have all that tech on your head, but you’ll definitely be turning heads if you cycle by wearing one of these smart connected helmets.

The Garmin Forerunner 235 has accurate GPS which is great for tracking runs, as well as a 24/7 wrist-based heart-rate monitor. It can track all-day activities like steps and sleep, and can display notifications from iPhone and Android devices. It’s water-resistant and can be worn in the shower or while swimming.

Design-wise it might be a bit too large for some people but it’s a great buy for serious and casual runners.
