Canadian based phone manufacturer BlackBerry have joined the likes of Kodak, Nokia and Betamax as companies who were once at the top of their fields, only to be outdone by newer and better technology.

BlackBerry was once global leader in smartphone sales thanks to it being one of the first phones to make use of a QWERTY keyboard along with e-mail functionality, effectively ushering in the modern era of smartphones. Since then brands such as Apple and Samsung have outpaced BlackBerry in terms of sales, and their once-popular messaging platform BBM has been replaced by WhatsApp.

John Chen, the CEO and executive chairman of BlackBerry said that, “The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners.” This follows a period of growth for the Ontario based company, how have been held back by  money-losing cellphone branch of the business. They have now instead made the decision to focus solely on app and other software development exclusively.

So sayonara BlackBerry, the early 2000s wouldn’t have been the same without you.
