Edible Six-Pack Rings Could Help Make The Oceans Safe Again

0

Our oceans are more polluted now than ever before with ocean wildlife facing mass extinction in some parts of the world because of it.

A company in Florida hopes to eradicate or at least alleviate the problem by developing a product to reduce the negative impact human pollution has on our oceans, and it is all made possible through a six-pack ring.

Six-pack rings and other plastic packaging find their way into the oceans and are often eaten by fish or birds which can ultimately lead to their death. Because of this very reason, Florida-based Saltwater Brewery came up with a simple yet effective idea to combat the devastation plastic six-pack rings currently poses on our ocean wildlife.

Saltwater Brewery will be using brewing byproducts (mostly grains) to manufacture biodegradable and edible six-pack rings.

The brewery hopes to eventually expand the edible packaging design to their other canned products and also hopes that other craft breweries start using similar biodegradable packaging.

Experts predict that a large portion of sea wildlife could become extinct within our lifetime due to pollution and climate change. Much of the pollution is easily avoidable by changing certain human behaviours such as minimising our use of plastics. Hopefully the Saltwater Brewery initiative sparks interest with other companies looking to improve the condition of our oceans.
