Nikon Unveils The D5100

Nikon have unveiled their newest upper-entry-level DSLR, the D5100. The Nikon D5100 D-SLR houses a host of new and innovative features aimed at giving photographers the tools to shatter creative constraints and tell stories with amazing image quality and stunning HD movies.

The Nikon D5100 includes features designed to enhance the shooting experience, including an impressive new 3-inch, super sharp 921,000-dot Vari-angle LCD screen and full HD (1080p) movie recording with full-time autofocus. The 16.2-megapixel D5100 is also the first Nikon D-SLR to provide in-camera effects that can be applied to both photos and movies to deliver even more creative expression.

If I do a very feature-focused comparison, then it seems to me that Nikon has put the D5100 in the same space as the Canon EOS 600D. The one major difference between the two is that the EOS 600D has an 18 Megapixel display and the D5100 only has a 16.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor.

The Nikon D5100 features an upgraded sensor. The Nikon D5100’s 16.2MP CMOS sensor that is carried over from the recent D7000, providing an extra 2MP resolution over the D5000. It also features
The movie shooting mode, again a feature that has previously been limited to mirrorless cameras, has been improved, too – and now offers the facility to record full-HD 1080p video using any lens in either manual or live autofocus modes.

It also features a new ME-1 microphone. To address the needs of the ever growing community of shooters abandoning their video cameras for the versatility of a D-SLR, Nikon now offers the ME-1 stereo microphone. Engineered specifically for a D-SLR, the new ME-1 microphone attaches to the hot shoe and has noise dampening components designed to minimize noise resulting from AF operation.

The camera is available as either a body only option or a Nikon D5100 with an 18-55mm lens kit. Other options include a double lens kit that either has a 55-200mm or 55-300mm lens.  So make your choice and get one of these as I expect the D5100 to become a very popular  upper-entry-level DSLR.
