The U turns on Nintendo

We live in a fast paced world and if you don’t adapt to the changes it brings, then you get left behind. New products are always on the horizon to replace existing products that are no longer exciting. Nintendo has unveiled their latest challenger, the Nintendo U in the console gaming battle against Apple,Sony and Microsoft. Apple is included in this space as handheld gaming on their handheld devices is slowly eroding market share from the big three. According to Nintendo, this is a new paradigm for video games and home entertainment. The Wii U is a new console with many facets. It includes a...

Microsoft Kinect Break Sales Record

Microsoft has announced that they have sold more than 10 million units of the Kinect worldwide. I must admit that is a good sign for the gaming industry as this feat will force Nintendo and Sony to respond.  Microsoft launched the Kinect with great fanfare and the accessory has lead to greater game sales for the Xbox 360. The Guinness World Records has officially named Kinect for Xbox 360 the fastest-selling consumer electronics device, which sold an average of 133,333 units per day for a total of eight million units in its first 60 days between November 4, 2010 and January 3, 2011. “The sales...

The Intel & Microsoft Relationship

Microsoft has had a below par year in terms of innovation. Their Windows Phone 7 cellphone operating system got a luke warm reception. The quiet disappearance of the HP Slate Tablet indicates that their move into the tablet computing arena is going nowhere at the moment. Compare this situation to that of Apple and Android, then Microsoft look like it is becoming irrelevant. I am fully aware of the dominance of their Windows operating system software but in all honesty desktop computing is no longer the cool market to be in. Smartphones and tablet computers are the main reasons for the dominance that...

Mario The Legend

Can you remember your first TV game? Yes, the cartridges that were clunky and had to be pushed into the console with a bit of force. We all have seen the evolution of the TV game into the gamezilla called console gaming. I was happy to see the newest version of Mario Galaxy 2 being available. The 2 plumbers that are continuously trying to save the damsel in distress, Princess Daisy have become cult heroes for any geek. Luigi and Mario will have first entrance into the video game hall of fame without a shadow of doubt. What I find interesting is that Nintendo have made Super Mario a very big part of...

The Next 12 Months In The Video Game Industry

Los Angeles hosted the biggest video game conference last week. E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is the most important week for console game players as manufacturers preview the next 12 months in terms of new products and development of new technologies. If I can summarize the event in a sentence then it would be “the dawn of 3D and motion orientated accessories”. Microsoft unveiled Project Natal which was renamed to Kinect. Kinect is Microsoft’s direct competition to the Nintendo Wii nun chuck. The player does not use a control pad but rather replicate movement with his body. The...
