If I think about photography then Kodak almost instantly comes to mind. Call it the effects of marketing but “a Kodak moment” is etched in my memory. I was incredibly sad to read the press reports that started with “Kodak files for bankruptcy protection”.

Every once and a while, someone or a manufacturer does something really different in comparison to the norm of their industry. Apple has done it a few times with their various product lines (especially the iPhone and iPad) and then there are start-ups like Lytro who push the boundaries with regards to technology. The point I am trying to make is that many companies irrespective of their size, push the boundaries to ensure a unique experience for their users.

Buying a business is supposedly to add value to it or to your company. We have seen it with Sony buying Ericsson and HP buying Palm. Most of the time it is to add another industry to your own operations. It can sometimes also be seen as a talent acquisition for a company.
