Winds of change are starting to blow over Research in Motion (RIM) in Canada. On Sunday co-CEO’s Jim Balsillie and Mike Laziridis handed over their duties to Thorsten Heins. Heins has been Chief Operating Officer of RIM (BlackBerry) for the past 4 years. The fact that the RIM board felt the CEO position should be held by an insider without looking for a fresh pair of eyes from a neutral person is interesting. BlackBerry unveiled their latest challengers to the iPhone yesterday in Toronto. The current range of BlackBerry products has not got the world on fire in terms of sales. RIM is facing the biggest challenge since their arrival as a cellphone manufacturer. The sales numbers in North America and Europe have not been inspiring. The importance of these new products have big implications for RIMs future.

I have had the unfortunate luck of losing my cellphone once and it sucked big time. Suddenly all of your data that was on your simcard (which we take for granted by the way) is gone. Your contact list, sms’s and emails are all no longer yours. I made a promise then that I would look after my phone and help others from not suffering the cellphone fail like I did.
