Apple has an event scheduled for later on today which has an educational tone to it. The first interesting thing is that the event is scheduled to happen at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. The museum is the world’s most renowned art gallery and it is located in the Mecca of the publishing industry. If I was in the book publishing industry I would keep a close eye on this event as the repercussions could have lasting effects.

Apple confirmed yesterday that it has acquired Israeli flash storage startup Anobit in December. However, in typical Apple fashion they declined to reveal the price of acquisition (rumoured to be $390 – $500 million). You might wonder what the big deal is about this transaction. In my opinion it is to compliment Apple’s efforts in using flash memory on their products. Apple told the press that “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

When I think about 2011 (which I am aware has 25 days left) in terms of cellphones and the mobile phone industry, one word does not want to leave my thoughts; Patents. Another thought that comes to mind is acquisitions. I believe that the latter was done by companies such as Google to bolster their patent collections.
Google, I think surprised everyone in the mobile space with their acquisition of Motorola Mobility. At the moment the acquisition is going through the Department of Justice. The process is likely to go through without any major issues in the first Quarter in 2012.
