With the approaching long-weekend, many are on the lookout for something fun and unusual to do. If you are one of those people, and you’re lucky enough to reside or vacation in Cape Town, Durban or Jo’burg, here’s an event list with a twist:

Turn back the clock – 23 March 2014

A Vintage Day is taking place in Cape Town’s bohemian suburb of Observatory this Sunday between 9am and 4pm. Lower Main road will transform to the likeness of days gone by.  Pull out your bobby socks and bell-bottom jeans for this event, as event organizers encourage patrons to dress up. Any outfit from the 1970s, or earlier is fair game.  Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed, too. Expect road closures, as only classic cars and motorcycles of the same time period will be able to access the event’s main road. Businesses in the area will be  play old school music and staff will dress up to compliment the event’s theme . This is an open-event, with no entry-fee.

Sky’s the limit – 21 -23 March 2014

The city of Durban will be taking entertainment to new heights this weekend. Six nations will take to the sky over the city’s beaches for the Durban Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics. This debut event will feature the top ten South African aero-aces, as well as national champions from Great Britain, Germany, USA, France and Russia. Parts of the promenade, North Beach and Bay Gardens will be transformed into event zones, to keep the crowd entertained  during Grand Prix flying breaks. The air-showcase runs for three days,  with free access to the public.

All aboard! Operational times are Wednesday – Sunday between 8am and 5pm

If you’re in the Pretoria area this weekend, why not treat the family to a day at the Cedar Junction Theme Park & Country Fair? Enjoy a trip around the park on one of three mini scale trains (petrol, diesel and steam), as it chugs over bridges and through tunnels. The park also boasts swimming pools, jumping castles, mini bike tracks, peddle-boats and more. Entry fee ranges between R20 and R30,  and food is available for purchase from their tuck shop.

With so many fun and exciting things happening, there is no reason not to head out and enjoy the long-weekend.
