The PriceCheck Guide: Be A Tourist In Your Own City (Part 3)

0

For the past two weeks, PriceCheck has given you our guide of fun things to do in Cape Town and Durban. This week, in part 3 of our “Be A Tourist In Your Own City” series, we move our attention to Jozi.

Johannesburg offers the first ever Acrobranch in South Africa. It can be found in the James and Ethel Grey Park, which is right around the corner from Melrose Arch. This outdoor activity offers you and your entire family the chance to go climbing from tree to tree on an obstacle course, while testing your balance, focus and strength. At Acrobranch you will find zip lines, monkey bridges and many more fun obstacles. Some of the obstacles are above 10 meters; however, you are secured with a harness as well as accompanied by a friendly guide.

Acrobranch has obstacle courses for both adults and children. Once you are done, you can relax and braai with your family and friends.

Another activity that will keep your heart rate up and adrenalin pumping is rock climbing. It is definitely something that keeps you fit, teaches you focus and discipline and most of all its great fun! The South African Climbing Academy offers training courses for school learners as well as adults wanting to learn about rock climbing and bouldering.

Designed by Andrew Pedley – a top South African climber, the training walls are angled at 15º, 30º, 45 º, 90 º, and are 4.8m in height (in accordance with the IFSC standard for bouldering). This is something for the entire family to enjoy, as well as opening options for specialised training such as power endurance!

If heavy endurance isn’t your thing, sandboarding is yet another great way to spend some time in Jozi! Mount Mayhem in Benoni (Oscar winner Charlize Theron’s home town) offers you the chance to experience fun in the sand. It is very similar to snowboarding, but without the snow. If you want speed, adrenalin and an absolute awesome time – sand boarding is what you should be doing.

Mount Mayhem has instructors that provide the equipment, beginner lessons, and will definitely make sure you are strapped up securely! So wear comfy clothes and enjoy the ride.

And lastly, if you liked going on the swings at your local park as a kid, you will definitely enjoy Power Swinging Across Soweto. The decommissioned cooling towers in Soweto, originally built for Orlando Power Station, is now the surface of South Africa’s largest mural and location of the world’s first power swing between two cooling towers!

Soweto, which is 21 townships wide and a major South African tourist attraction, is the home of the cooling towers, which are 33 stories high and a major South African adrenalin attraction.

As soon as you’ve decided, you will be harnessed and lifted up 100m in an open-air elevator and a floating staircase. You can either chicken out and return the way you came, or…. step onto the jump platform on the rim of the tower and have vertical velocity increase your adrenalin levels by either descending the drop into the cooling tower or swinging between the two towers!

These are just a few of the GREAT things that you can do in Jozi. Let us know what other fun activities are out there.
