Phone theft is a problem many of us have had to deal with, or may find ourselves dealing with one day. Many manufacturers have various tracking and other anti-thefts measures in place, but now Apple is looking to take anti-theft components to a new level.

Next generation iPhones could come equipped with tech to capture a thief’s fingerprints and photo when stolen

According to a patent recently filed by Apple they could be implementing a new “trigger” system that activates if your iPhone is ever stolen. Once activated, your iPhone would then automatically gather biometric information such as the fingerprints and photographers of any would-be thieves.

In theory the security measures would become activated if your iPhone detects any irregular activity such as typing in the incorrect password. There are still some technical hurdles that could prevent this such as the way that the iPhone sometimes requires you to run your finger across the TouchID scanner multiple times before it fully scans your thumbprint, something a thief is unlikely to do.

While there currently a few iOS and Android based anti-theft apps out there, there isn’t really anything that comes pre-installed onto your phone.
