Black Friday: What the Retailers Have to Say

0

Black Friday is an exciting and relatively new shopping event in South Africa, but despite this, last year Google reported that South Africa had the most online searches for Black Friday than any other country in the world!

Well, the big shopping weekend is just over a month away, and leading up to the event, we spoke with a number of local retailers regarding their past Black Friday experiences and any specifics on what they’ve got planned for this year’s event.

Superbalist

“Black Friday, and the time leading up to it, is a really exciting time for us. We start planning really early and are laying the foundations months before the actual date. The growth we have seen over the last few years is extreme and it shows no signs of slowing down. Despite having been involved in this period for years and building a load of efficiencies into tackling the monster that is Black Friday, we always find new ambitious projects and things we never thought of in previous years so it is always a fresh new challenge.” – Clynton McCalgan, head of digital at Superbalist.

Bidorbuy

“Black Friday is exciting for all of us here at bidorbuy because we know how much it means to our buyers and sellers. Helping buyers find great deals whilst helping sellers meet their goals is what gets us out of bed on Black Friday – and every day. Our focus leading up to the event is to collaborate with the sellers to find, curate and secure stock for the awesome savings people expect from bidorbuy on Black Friday. This year we’ll also be giving Black Friday shoppers the chance to win back the value of their entire cart.

Black Friday is certainly growing in popularity in SA, starting earlier each year and turning into an event that lasts the whole month. This trend has had a positive impact on our figures; where we used to see a peak towards the end of November and December, we now see exponential growth the week of Black Friday.

It’s also interesting to note which products tend to fly off the bidorbuy virtual shelves. In 2018, we saw high double-digit year-on-year sales growth in our Home & Living category, while Toys & Hobbies and Sport & Leisure broke into our top categories.” – Anne-Marie Green, bidorbuy marketing manager.

Loot

“The Black Friday weekend itself is the culmination of months of hard work – of discussions with suppliers that started six months before, of stock buy-ins and bulk shipments, of system checks and contingency planning, and of detailed sessions with logistics partners – weeks of work from multiple departments, different marketing strategies and discussions with affiliation partners, all building to that midnight moment which has come to define the festive shopping season in the online world. Loot.co.za looks forward to delivering another frenzied doze of massive savings to our valued customers and partners.” – Greg Le Roux, Loot CEO.

Clicks

“The Black Friday period is not only an exciting period for customers but also for us at Clicks. It has completely changed the manner in which people shop in the run-up to Christmas. The preparation for Christmas and Black Friday is an all year round task for us. We analyse and consider product and customer trends from South Africa and around the world. We will be running even more fantastic deals and have sourced some of the winners from last year.

We have even more stores to be able to shop from this year having recently opened our 700th store and we also have our largest range ever available online to be delivered or to be collected in store.” – Rachel Wrigglesworth, Clicks Chief Commercial Officer.

Takealot

“Takealot.com brought the biggest sale of the year (Black Friday) to South Africa back in 2012. Since then, the company has seen its Takealot Blue Dot Sale grow exponentially year-on-year, and expects much of the same this year. The 2019 Blue Dot Sale will offer significant discounts across key categories including tech, appliances, sport, outdoor, beauty, toys and more. In addition, shoppers using the Takealot app will be able to shop exclusive app-only Blue Dot deals. For now, they’re keeping their cards close to their chest but will release further details closer to the time.” – Takealot.
