Are Fantasy Films & Novels Any Good?

0

Percy-Jackson-Sea-of-Monsters-QuadI recently met someone who got me hooked on the idea of reading adventure and fantasy books. I had a very successful venture into reading Sci-Fi in the way of a book called The Adoration of Jenna Fox – which wasn’t too much science fiction to take in and read about, so it didn’t overwhelm me and put me off the genre entirely. Just as non-threatening as my foray into sci-fi, so was my first brush with officially wanting to try out the fantasy genre, namely the character of Percy Jackson.

Well, I cheated a little and I didn’t read the first book, Percy Jackson: The Lightening Thief – I watched the second movie in the series instead. PercyJackson: The Sea of Monsters in a word was awesome! It was everything that I expected fantasy and adventure to be. It had mythical creatures, great fight scenes and lots of comedy too, which I didn’t really expect. What I loved the most were the elements of Greek Mythology. I have always found this intriguing because my last name is derived from Greek Mythology – which I will tell anyone that is willing to listen. I’m definitely going to spend some time reading the Percy Jackson series now.

My interest was so great and intense for this “new” genre I discovered that when the person who introduced me to it texted and asked if I wanted to see The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, I jumped at the chance. I must say that I was not too impressed by the film. The magic and fantasy aspect was great, the acting itself was fine but the sugary sweet, clichéd romantic side was just not good. It was almost as bad as The Twilight Series in this regard. However, the movie still captured my interest and now I really actually want to read The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. It’s safe to say that I am definitely planning to include this genre into my reading list more and I am definitely keen to watch more of these kinds of movies too. In my opinion this genre is pretty cool.

However…

I still haven’t departed from my drama-filled roots. Just to get back to some ‘real life” movie experience, I watched Thanks For Sharing. The film stars Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins and singer Pink (who also makes an appearance).

If you have any fantasy and adventure recommendations, please let me know so that I can have a look at them.
