BlackBerry unveiled their latest challengers to the iPhone yesterday in Toronto. The current range of BlackBerry products has not got the world on fire in terms of sales. RIM is facing the biggest challenge since their arrival as a cellphone manufacturer. The sales numbers in North America and Europe have not been inspiring. The importance of these new products have big implications for RIMs future.
In South Africa though, they are arguably the most popular cellphone manufacturers. The BlackBerry Torch (disclaimer: I own one) has been a hit and has given me hope for BlackBerry. The 2 new phones are family members to the Torch. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 and the Torch 9860 both feature the newest version of the BlackBerry operating system, version 7. The BlackBerry Torch 9860 does not seem to be a slider but rather sports a bigger touch screen.
I have one problem though, which was highlighted by a colleague: It is almost impossible to know which one is the newer version of the Torch 9800. That might be a huge problem for BlackBerry as without the updated software there is not a lot of new features.
So would you consider buying one of these?
Will consider the newcomers (incl. 9900) in the Blackberry family. But RIM are really taking a pounding on the market! I hope it’s mostly speculation and the BB contingent stays a strong competitor in the smart market.
Personally keen on the 9900 because of all the new features…and maybe the 9860 because it’s different from the original Torch.
